Choose the Right Laptop for You
Written by Michael McHugo
I was having a chat with a friend this week who was fed up with her “slow” laptop, and it was the machine’s fault, not that it had been powered on since the day it was bought. (She promised it wasn’t that long)
The laptop, after a reboot, wasn’t a bad machine, a little old maybe, but it just wasn’t fit for the way she works and never was really. She’s what we in tech would call a power user: browser tabs open all day, Zoom calls, cloud apps, constant multitasking. Her machine was technically fine… just never built for that load.
We did a quick review, and here’s what we talked through the stuff that matters when choosing a laptop:
🧠 How to Tell if Your Laptop’s Holding You Back
Quick tip: Search “About your PC” in the Start menu. You’ll see a screen something like this:

Here’s what to check for what problems you have and what to spec for ;
🔹 Slow to open apps? → You may not have an SSD. These days, it’s non-negotiable. Go for 512GB if you can. 238Gb is fine for most, but it can fill up fast.
🔹 Lag with too many tabs or Zoom calls? → That’s usually a RAM problem. 16GB is today’s recommended starting point if it’s your primary device.
🔹 Basic tasks still feel sluggish? → Could be an old CPU. Look for 12th-gen Intel (or newer), or Ryzen 5/7.
Simple Habits That Make a Big Difference
Even the best laptop will slow down without a little care. Here are five easy habits to keep it running smoothly:
- Restart regularly. Sleep mode doesn’t count. Reboots clear memory and apply updates.
- Keep software up to date. That includes Windows, drivers, and your apps.
- Leave some storage free. Keep at least 15–20% of your SSD empty to avoid slowdowns.
- Review your startup apps. Too many programs launching at boot time can drag things down.
- Use cloud storage wisely. Move large files to OneDrive, Google Drive, or Dropbox when you can.
What to Look For
Now that you know what to watch out for, here’s what to prioritise when buying a laptop today:
1. SSD (Solid State Drive): SSDs make your machine faster in every way. They improve boot times, app load speed, and overall responsiveness. Go for 512GB if you can — 256GB fills up quickly once Windows, apps, and files pile up.
2. RAM (Memory): Think of RAM as your laptop’s short-term memory. More RAM means more breathing room to multitask without slowdowns. 16GB is ideal for anyone using their laptop daily for work. 8GB isn’t cutting it anymore.
3. Processor (CPU): Your processor determines how quickly your machine thinks and responds. Choose a 12th-gen (or newer) Intel i5 or i7, or a recent Ryzen 5 or 7. Avoid older chips, even if the label looks “high-end.”
4. Windows 11 — Make Sure It’s Pro: Most business laptops come with Windows 11 Home by default, but that’s not ideal for work use. Go with Windows 11 Pro so you can:
- Use BitLocker for encryption.
- Join Azure AD and apply company policies
- Manage devices through Microsoft Intune
- Use tools like Autopilot for easy setup and rollouts
Other Upgrades Worth Thinking About
These might not be top of mind when you’re buying, but they make a difference:
Battery health tools — Some laptops allow you to limit charging to 80%, which helps extend battery life if you stay plugged in most of the day.
Wi-Fi 6 or 6E — Newer Wi-Fi standards give you faster, more reliable internet, especially in busy offices or shared spaces.
Full disk encryption — Make sure BitLocker is enabled to protect your data in case your device is lost or stolen.
Biometric logins — Fingerprint readers and facial recognition make logging in faster and more secure.
Docking and screen support — If you use an external display, check that your laptop supports USB-C/Thunderbolt and high resolutions like 1440p or 4K.
Warranty options — A 3-year on-site or next-day warranty might cost more upfront, but pays for itself with a single hardware issue.
Bonus: A Good IT Partner Can Do the Heavy Lifting
A well-managed device doesn’t just run better — it stays secure, updated, and quietly productive. Reboots happen when they should. Patches are applied automatically. You don’t have to think about it.
Need to swap a device? Tools like Autopilot + Intune make it easy. Sign in and go; everything comes with you.
Final Thought
When was the last time your IT provider sat down with you to help you choose a laptop that fits your day-to-day work?
With today’s work, your laptop isn’t an accessory; it’s your entire work environment.
Choose one that fits how you work, and get support that helps it keep working.
