Quiet time policies in Microsoft Intune
What are Quiet Time Policies?
Quiet Time policies let you suppress (mute) Outlook email and Teams notifications on iOS, iPadOS, and Android during periods you define, such as after work hours.
This simplified guide makes it easier to roll out and manage Quiet Time policies in Microsoft Intune so your team can enjoy interruption-free time outside of working hours. Setting clear boundaries between work and personal time helps staff recharge, reduce burnout, and return to work more focused and productive. Quiet Time policies are a practical way to support a healthier work–life balance while keeping business communication under control.
There are three types of Quiet Time policies:
| Policy Type | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Date Range | Mute notifications between a specific start and end date/time. |
| Days of the week | Mute on certain days or during specific hours on those days. |
| Non-working time | Mute Teams notifications when the user is “off shift” (requires Working Time API integration). |
Be careful with the Non-working time option—if your organisation hasn’t integrated with the Working Time API, it might lead to missed Teams notifications.
How to Create a Quiet Time Policy
Here’s a simple step-by-step:
Sign in to the Microsoft Intune admin centre.
Go to Apps → Quiet Time → Policies.
Click Create policy.
Choose the Policy Type you want (Date Range, Days of the week, or Non-working time).
Click Create to open the “Basics” settings.
On the Basics page, supply a Name and optional Description. The Platform (iOS/Android) is already set.
Click Next to go to Configuration settings. Here’s where you define exactly when notifications will be muted.
Click Next to go to Scope tags (optional—you can use this for role-based access).
Click Next to go to Assignments. Assign the policy to user groups. A policy only takes effect if it’s assigned.
Click Next to reach Review + create, check your settings, and then Create the policy.
How to Edit an Existing Policy
If you need to make changes (for example, add or remove user groups, or adjust the quiet time settings), here’s how:
To change user group assignments:
In Quiet Time → Policies, find the policy you want to edit.
Under Assignments, click Edit.
To include new user groups: use Add groups under “Included groups.”
To exclude groups: use Add groups under “Excluded groups.”
To remove existing groups: click Remove next to the group in either Included or Excluded.
Click Review + save, then Save your changes.
To change configuration settings (the “when to mute” details):
In Quiet Time → Policies, locate the policy you want to adjust.
Under Configuration settings, click Edit and adjust values.
Click Review + save, then Save the changes.
Note: when you change a policy, it may take up to 24 hours for the new settings to reach users.
Quiet Time Configuration Options
Here’s a quick breakdown of the settings you’ll see depending on the policy type:
Date Range
Start: the date and time when muting begins.
End: the date and time when muting ends.
Days of the week
This option has multiple sections you can configure:
All day: If set to “Require,” notifications are muted all day on selected days.
Certain hours: Define start and end times and select which days to apply them.
End user overrides: Allows or disallows users to override the quiet time setting on their device.
